5 Films of the Day: October 26

Here is the next day of the XXXII Message to Man Film Festival in St. Petersburg. Every day our website will recommend five films from its competition and out-of-competition programmes.

Vegetable Garden

A story of elderly women from the provinces in search of meaning in their lives. Zoya lives in the city, but every day she has to go out of town to water her vegetable garden, which helps to feed her family. Despite her advanced years, she doesn’t complain and does not impose her unhappiness upon others. One day she meets Valery at a sanatorium, and an instant attraction forms between them. Can the couple find a way of being together, despite their preconceptions?

Carmen, or an Unfortunate Love Story of Hanspeter from Oberkassel, that Made my Children Happy in a Foreign Country

In search of Carmen, who spends the night in a new place every week, cannot read or write, does not have an account in social networks and a permanent phone number, the director traveled 500 kilometers, visited four cities and five federal states of Germany, at a fair, in a stable, in a beer tent, in a gypsy camp, heard a dozen incredible stories and drew a large family tree.

Don Juan

Jilted on his wedding day, Laurent, a stage actor playing the role of the famous seducer Don Juan, cannot help but see his ex-fiancée in every woman he meets. In an attempt to mend his broken heart and ego, he tries to seduce them all but none are receptive to his elaborate advances. Meanwhile, at the theatre, the leading lady quits and the production brings in Laurent’s ex-fiancée as the replacement.

A new film be cctor, director and screenwriter Serge Bozon. Winner of Prix Jean Vigo for La France (2007). His next feature Tip Top (2013) won SACD special mention at the Directors’ Fortnight, and Mrs. Hyde (2017) won the Best Actress award at the Locarno IFF.

Brightness

Sand overruns the earth. The sun draws nearer the planet. A dreadful drought invades the Sahel. And cruelly the conflicts of generations tear apart the Bambaras.

A cinematic gem: a Malian film directed by Souleymane Cissé in 1987. The film was shot in the Bamana and Fula languages, and the plot is based on the legend of the Bambara people. In an interview with the French edition of Cahiers du Cinéma, Souleymane Cissé argues that the film’s aim was to “oppose European ethnographic cinema” as well as “to respond to external perceptions”.

The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first African film to win this award in the history of the festival.

Things I Could Never Tell My Mother

Humaira Bilkis has a problem: after a pilgrimage to Mecca, her mother, who was previously an emancipated poet, has now become devout. The filmmaker has to fight to get her to accept the camera, since her religion forbids images, while hiding her relationship with a Hindu man from Calcutta.
