Attention, practicing filmmakers and video artists! The Message to Man International Film Festival is now accepting enrollments for the Neural Network Film Laboratory.
“Our path leads through the poetry of machines,
from the bungling citizen to the perfect electric man”
Dziga Vertov, We. Variant of a Manifesto, 1922
This year, the 34th Message to Man International Film Festival introduces CYBEREYE: the Neural Network Film Laboratory named after Dziga Vertov. Over the course of four days, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to interact with neural networks under the guidance of Andrea Gatopoulos*, a tutor from the NOUVELLE BUG art residency. They will also take part in creating a collaborative film, which will be presented by the authors during a special screening at the Festival’s closing.
Training at the Laboratory is free, but enrollment is limited. Participants will be selected on a competitive basis, based on applications submitted.
In addition to closed practical sessions for Laboratory participants, the programme also includes public events: a series of lectures on AI, and screenings of films created using neural networks.
* Andrea Gatopoulos is a film producer and director based in Italy. He graduated from the Faculty of Modern Literature at Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in virtual reality and entertainment. His research into virtual environment began in 2017 with the Bit Reality photo project, leading to his participation in the 54th section of the Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des cinéastes) at Cannes with his short film Happy New Year, Jim. His films have been featured in over 100 festivals worldwide, including Cannes, Venice, Rotterdam, Rome, Camerimage. Mr. Gatopoulos also teaches at the Nouvelle Bug film residency in Italy, which focuses on creating films in the Machinima genre using artificial intelligence.
Application deadline: 20 September 2024
