Synopsis:
A story delving into the creative biography of Alexei German Sr. through the lens of his final film, “Hard to Be a God”. Much of the behind-the-scenes footage from the production is being published for the first time. Herman did not align with any particular school or cinematic trend. While crafting his films, he drew inspiration from the works of Bruegel and Bosch. Herman’s hyper-reality is so densely packed with details that viewers may feel overwhelmed. His method demanded such meticulous dedication that he completed only five films in his lifetime, and his last one remained unfinished. So, what was this unique method?
About the authors of the ideas:
Alexei German Jr. Author of the ideas, screenwriter, producer, actor. In 2001 he graduated from VGIK, workshop of Sergey Solovyov. He has more than 10 directorial works to his credit. His films have earned nominations at numerous international festivals, including Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, and have won awards such as the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival, among others.
Elena Okopnaya. Production designer, costume designer, non-fiction film director. She graduated from
VGIK, department of production and economics and received a second degree at the scriptwriting and directing courses (workshop of Pavel Lungin and Irina Volkova). Elena is known for her work on the films “Under Electric Clouds”, “Dovlatov”, “House Arrest” and others. She received the Berlinale’s Silver Bear award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution in 2018, as well as the Nika and the East-West: Golden Arch awards for Best Work by a Production Designer in 2019.
