Frank Heath
Artist and director, he was born in 1982 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He has exhibited his work in solo shows at the Simone Subal Gallery, New York and collaboratively at the Swiss Institute, New York; Young World, Detroit; Simone SubalGallery, New York; Art Basel Statements, Basel; and the Videotage Gallery, Hong Kong. His work has exhibited in group shows and screenings at venues including the Kitchen, New York; International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Power Plant, Toronto; Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the High Line, New York. Heath currently lives and works in New York City.

Description

The short animation “Being is Negative” attempts to express the world view of Buddhism. Buddhism is not spiritualism as commonly understood by people. In fact, Buddhism emphasizes illusion. All things that can be perceived and thought in the world are illusions, and only the self nature is the real noumenon.

About the director:

Sun Xun
Artist, animator. Born in 1980 in Fuxin, Liaoning Province, China. He graduated from the Printmaking Department of the China Academy of Art in 2005. In 2006, he founded the animation studio π. Currently, he is based in Beijing. Sun Xun works across many mediums, such as acrylic, ink, pastel, traditional animation, and different printmaking techniques, including woodcut. He is considered one of the most interesting and prolific young artists in China, with his works featured at the Berlinale and Venice. In 2023, his film Shanghai in the Spring won an award in the In Silico competition at the Message to Man IFF.

Patrick Bokanowski
Director, producer. Born in 1943, he lives and works in Paris. Between 1961 and 1963 he studied photography, optics and darkroom techniques with the painter Henri Dimier. Since 1972 he has produced a dozen short films and two features, all using experimental techniques of shooting, animation and post production. Most notably, he has researched lens distortion and he has invented various techniques of capturing images using non-standard lenses or other transparent or reflective material. His work lies on the edge between figurative and abstract and between live action and animation. He has had several gallery shows of his photographic works, and his films, awarded in many international film festivals, have been acquired by many major collections including the Pompidou Center and the National Film Archives of France.

Angélica Restrepo
Filmmaker from Columbia. She graduated from the School of Film and Television of the National University of Colombia. Her work oscillates between new media and art direction. She was also part of the Art Department in the film Memoria by Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Carlos Velandia
Media artist, film programmer and filmmaker whose work focuses on feminism, anti-colonialism, expanded animation and new technologies. Additionally, his work has been exhibited in Colombian museums and the Bogotá Cinematheque. He has been invited as a curator and jury member at events such as the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma Montréal and the Bogotá International Film Festival; he has been selected as an Emerging Latin American Film Programmer by the Locarno Film Festival (Industry Academy International – 2020).

Description

A disheveled pigeon on a windowsill reminds Ramona of a painful memory of her past that she thought she had successfully suppressed. Having resurfaced, she has no choice but to confront them in this dark night of the soul.
“Gołębie” can be described as a happy accident. The film came together on two different occasions on two different days, begging to be made. It is an exercise in crafting a narrative out of completely non-diegetic sound and the sheer manipulative power of cinema as a medium.

Writer, filmmaker, sound-designer and theater practitioner, he is based in Mumbai, India. A storyteller by heart, he tries to articulate himself through the medium of film, theater, photography and literature. “This gentle trip from Viktoria Schmid surveys the architecture of Manhattan in a series of fixed-frame compositions, each exposed three times, through red, green, and blue filters. The city’s range of beiges, browns, and grays remain steady, while highlights and shadows splinter into geometric arrays of color. This tension between consistency and change draws the mind toward one of the traits of modern New York which Schmid avoids: its glass-facade new construction. The matter of what goes into making a city durable as both idea and place is a heavy one, though the film’s opalescent skies do help to lighten it.” (Phil Coldiron)

Viktoria Schmid
Born in Neuhofen/Ybbs, Austria; visual artist and filmmaker based in Vienna. She is working at the interface of the cinematic and the exhibition space. Schmid studied at the Friedl-Kubelka-School, received her BA in film theory from the University of Vienna and her MA from the University of Art in Linz. Her installations and films have been shown internationally.

Zhenia Kazankina
Born in Moscow, Russia in 1996, Zhenia Kazankina (she/her) is a screenwriter and director and a graduate of the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). Her work revolves around themes of solitude, attachment, and alienation from a feminine perspective. Her short films have screened internationally in festivals such as Locarno Film Festival, Palm Springs ShortFest, ZINEBI, True/False and many others. She participated in the In Silico competition of Message to Man IFF 2023 with Empty Rooms. She is an Alumna of Locarno Filmmakers’ Academy and Spring Academy and of Reykjavík Talent Lab.

Narges Kalhor
Director, video artist. Born and raised in Tehran, she studied directing at the Tehran Film School and visual communications at Kamal-Ol-Molk University, where she began making short and experimental films. Since 2009, she has been living in Germany, where she graduated from the Munich University of Television and Film. Kalhor’s film Shoot Me (2014) was nominated for the German Short Film Award. Her feature debut, In the Name of Scheherazade (2019), received a prize at the DOK Leipzig festival and the Bavarian Cultural Prize. Her second feature, Shahid (2024), had its world premiere at the Berlinale Forum and later won the documentary competition at the 1/6 Film Festival.
