Digital approximations of film artifacts, ranging from industrial to experimental, move through the frame in impossible trajectories. A film about film signified.

About the director:

Christine Lucy Latimer
Lens- and time-based media artist from Toronto/Tkaronto, on Treaty 13. Latimer’s work excavates the influence of capitalism and planned obsolescence on 20th-century moving image technologies. Repairing and resuscitating discarded film and tape elements in hybrid gestures, she orchestrates freak anachronistic dialogues between the photochemical, photoelectric, and digital. Her works have been featured in hundreds of film festivals and gallery exhibitions across five continents. Latimer participated twice in the In Silico section of the Message to Man Film Festival: in 2020 with House Pieces and in 2021 with Tender.

After generating a series of AI-produced images and videos, the artist initiates a dialogue with another AI model – uploading the visuals and prompting it to interpret their meaning. As a final step, the music is specially written by an AI model as the most appropriate to the topic of the work, according to its opinion.

About the director:

George Drivas
Born in Athens, Greece. He represented Greece at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. Drivas has received numerous awards and distinctions, including a nomination for the Eye Art & Film Prize (Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam, 2020), a grant from the Greek Ministry of Culture for digital media (2020), and 2nd Prize at the VII Media Art Forum, Moscow International Film Festival (2006). His works are in the collection of the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), Athens.

His works have been presented at international film festivals and art institutions. Schmidt’s Sence+Innocence received the Jury Diploma of the In Silico competition in 2011.

In various states and forms (liquid, vapour, ice; raw and refined stone), the elements of this union aim to evoke, with a near-tactile chill on the skin, a multifaceted St. Petersburg: austere and enigmatic, monolithic yet secretive. Water and stone—two opposing forces—merge through human will, not to destroy one another but to create something marvellous. At a certain point, the boundary between ice and granite dissolves: ancient ammonites, once dwellers of the seas, turn to stone; the river’s icy veneer cracks like an old embankment. Out of mist or blizzard, Petrograd emerges before us.

Filmmaker. A student at the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television, workshop led by Alexander Markov and Maria Popritsak. In her work, she often turns to the theme of memory, weaving together archives, interpretations, and dreams in search of a single recollection—whether forgotten or not yet lived.
