Before his 1969 concert in Paris, the great jazz musician Thelonious Monk gave an ill-fated television interview. That footage became the premise for a film by Alain Gomis—a work that compassionately spotlights a genius lost in other people’s world.
About the director:
Alain Gomis
Franco-Senegalese filmmaker. Studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris. He made his directorial debut in 2002 with L’afrance (As a Man), a film exploring the struggles of migrants in France, which won the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. His feature Andalucia screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2012. Aujourd’hui (Tey) premiered in competition at Berlinale and received the Golden Stallion at FESPACO. Alain Gomis returned to Berlinale in 2017 with Félicité, winning him the Grand Jury Prize.
