Synopsis:
The Kyrgyz government is offering humanitarian aid to ethnic Kyrgyz roaming the Wakhan Corridor in northeastern Afghanistan. Many inhabitants of this region leave their highland homes in search of a new life. Among those who get the opportunity to move to Kyrgyzstan with their family is Nurulkhak. Despite government support, education and housing, adapting to a new way of life is not easy. The difference in life experiences creates an abyss between locals and newcomers. Nurulkhak realizes that the urban way of life cannot give him the freedom that once accompanied him in nature.
About the director:
Janyl Jusupjan. Director. She was born in Kyrgyzstan, and studied literature in Kazakhstan. She worked as a journalist at radio before embarking on independent documentary filmmaking in 2015 Janyl studied film at Cinedoc Formation and Les Ateliers Varan in France. In 2016, her first feature documentary “Letters from the Pamirs” premiered at Traces de vies in France and received Grand Prix at Kyrgyzstan. Her second feature “Prisoner of Wakhan” is on an official selection for One World 2023 “Atirkül in the Land of Real Men” in post-production is her third feature documentary.
