After the Romanian Revolution reached its peak during the Christmas Holidays of 1989, Romania’s Communist patriarch and his wife Elena were sentenced to death by a military court and accordingly gunned down. Chris Marker’s short video-collage Détour Ceauşescu documents how the execution was depicted by France’s national TV-channel TF1.

Chris Marker
Chris Marker (1921–2012, France) is regarded as one of the most innovative makers of fiction and documentary film of the 1960s and 1970s. He is best known for the award-winning Sans soleil (1983), a film about human memory. His documentaries on Beijing, Siberia, and Cuba have become classics. Little is known of his life: Marker (the pseudonym of Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve) avoided interviews and invented facts of his own biography. Before focusing, in the early 1950s, on non-dogmatic, Marxist-oriented documentaries, he wrote several articles, essays, poems, and a novel.
