Description
Images from the Berlin locality Prenzlauer Berg prior to the monetary union: Prenzlauer Berg band “Autumn in Peking” sings “We need a revolution” amid ruins of the Wall on the edge of their Berlin borough. But it’s May 1990 and there’s not much chance of that any more. Knatter-Karl is at a knees-up in ‘Prater’ with his girl. In ‘Hackepeter’, Frieda and Gerda gossip about the parrot that was stolen from the zoo when the Wall came down. The police chase armed men while seamstresses explain why the Vietnamese are the first to get their cards. A lonely customer in the Viennese cafe bids farewell with a song about the old homeland, while Romanian musicians head for the Balkan Express. Squatters dream of anarchy, and the owner of Berlin’s most celebrated sausage stall baptises her till with its first western coin. The monetary union is upon us.
