A diamond! Its beauty, connoisseurs say, owes much to the subtlety of the total internal reflection… The craftsman polishes its facets so that a ray of light entering through one can only exit along the same path! This creates the brilliance, the dazzle! A ballerina performs a cascade of exquisitely precise pirouettes, glittering like the facets of a diamond… Thirty-two pirouettes… A perfect image… A diamond… Indeed—a diamond! The story is set in NEP-era Leningrad. A ballerina steals a brooch, a splendid gift. After the thief leaves the jewelry store, a black balloon begins to follow her.
