About the director:

Saif Alsaegh
Filmmaker from Baghdad, he now lives and works in USA. Much of Saif’s work deals with the contrast between the landscape of his youth in Baghdad growing up as part of the indigenous Chaldean minority in the nineties and early 2000s, and the U.S. landscape where he currently lives. His films have screened in festivals and venues including Cinémadu Réel, Kurzfilm Hamburg, Kassel Dokfest, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Gene Siskel Film Center. He received his MFA in film from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Alsaegh is lecturer of film at California State University – Fullerton.

A disheveled pigeon on a windowsill reminds Ramona of a painful memory of her past that she thought she had successfully suppressed. Having resurfaced, she has no choice but to confront them in this dark night of the soul.
“Gołębie” can be described as a happy accident. The film came together on two different occasions on two different days, begging to be made. It is an exercise in crafting a narrative out of completely non-diegetic sound and the sheer manipulative power of cinema as a medium.

“Meat Grinder 2” is an attempt, at one hand, to “listen” to the past – and to distance ourselves from the current moment on the other. The title is referred to the eponymous 1928 OBERIU’s film by Klimenti Mints and Aleksandr Razumovsky, which was proclaimed as an anti-war statement by the authors. “Meat Grinder 2” is constructed from the lines of people who witnessed an air raid. Each line reflects a certain auditory experience, and together they are built into a chronicle of one single day, the sequence of events of which is deconstructed in the film.

Nikita Spiridonov
Visual artist, director, scriptwriter. Bea de Visser is recognised for her film art, installation work and sound performances. Her work can best be described as a digital media-based practice – from the perspective of a painter and storyteller who looks at the world through different lenses. Bea de Visser attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1993–1995). Prior to that, she pursued her studies painting with a study of electroacoustic sound. She initially began her career as a sound and performance artist in the trendy club scene and artist’s spaces in the early 1980s. With her installation work, she was involved with international exhibitions in museums, art spaces and galleries, including MoMA New York, National Museum Prague, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

No matter in which environment we humans appear, we leave traces there. Whether we want it or not, our presence inevitably inscribes itself in the spaces we enter. For the work “Surface Séance”, I made traces of human bodies on various surfaces the subject of an animated film. This film technique makes it possible to create the illusion that the individual smudges, caused by countless different people, grow together to form a single body. (Michael Heindl)

Michael Heindl
Director, media artist. Born in 1988 in Linz he studied painting at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and at the NCAD in Dublin. He lives and works in Vienna and Scharten (Upper Austria). In his works, he deals with the contradictions and paradoxes of human action in the face of a present that is experienced as crisis-ridden. His main themes are dealing with the threat of climate catastrophe and a capitalism that is perceived as being without alternative. He has received several art awards, including the Jury Prize of VIS 2021, the Crossing Europe Innovative Award 2020 (Jury Prize), the LENTOS Art Prize 2016 and the Prize of the Passau Art Association 2014.

Matchboxes are packaged in the most fantastical, symbolic imagery, becoming mini-portals to dream worlds. The film attempts to create loops of meta-narratives held together with the glue of recorded history, breaching them every now and then to withdraw back to the original isolation and unintentionality of the act of collection, and perhaps even the creation of the images.

Yann Chapotel
Director, editor. He studied cinema at the University of Paris 8 in Saint-Denis (France). The democratization of video creation tools in the 2000s then led him to gradually free himself from traditional modes of production and narration, his language then taking the path of formal experimentation, particularly around the theme of time and its representation. In parallel with his personal work, he edited the films of the artist Camille Henrot between 2007 and 2017. He has also been creating video scenography since 2012, mainly for operas.

Director. Born in 1988 in the Basque Country, he graduated from the University of the Basque Country and studied at the universities of Cluj, Vigo, and Barcelona. Jorge participated in IDFAcademy and Berlinale Talents, his films The Interior City (2017), The Scars (2019), and In the Blink of an Eye (Message to Man’s In Silico competition 2022) have been showcased and won awards at festivals including IDFA, DOK Leipzig, Oberhausen, Punto de Vista, Tirana, and Guadalajara.
