Nadezhda Vasileva

Costume designer, artist, and curator

Russian costume designer, artist, and curator. Born in 1962 in Leningrad, Vasilyeva is the widow of film director Alexei Balabanov and collaborated as a costume designer on most of his films. She has also worked with directors Semyon Aranovich, Alexei Uchitel, Vasily Sigarev, Rustam Khamdamov, Vladimir Bortko, and Renata Litvinova. Exhibitions of her costume designs for Uchitel’s film Matilda were showcased in Tsarskoye Selo and Moscow’s GUM (2016). In 2024, she held a solo exhibition at L’aléatoire gallery in Paris. Vasilyeva curated the retrospectives ‘Costume in Cinema’ at the Zerkalo International Film Festival (2018, 2019) and taught a course titled ‘Russian Costume’ at the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design. She is a two-time Nika Award winner for best costume design for The Castle (1994) and Matilda (2017).
