Let us see what the directors of this year\u2019s National Competition have set out to explore.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the search begins within one\u2019s own family. Such is <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/stary-dom-old-house\/\"><i>Old House<\/i><\/a> by Lyubov Korlykhanova, where the author and her sister try to uncover what really happened to their parents, who died long ago under mysterious circumstances. In <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/razgovor-conversation\/\"><i>Conversation<\/i><\/a>, experimental film classic Masha Godovannaya visits her elderly father to learn about his youth\u2014and to better understand herself. Sasha Zubkovsky\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/prazdniki-holidays\/\"><i>Holidays<\/i><\/a>, woven from amateur Soviet-era home footage, immerses us in the everyday lives of the director\u2019s grandparents\u2019 generation.<\/p>\n<p>Next to this quiet, intimate world of family are other worlds entirely. In Sofya Keller\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/seti-nets\/\"><i>Nets<\/i><\/a>, we witness elderly women volunteers weaving camouflage nets, while Inna Kudryavtseva\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/schast-happin\/\"><i>Happin<\/i><\/a>\u00a0follows a mother of many awaiting her beloved\u2019s return from the frontline.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s competition features many films about death and transience. Murad Kamalov\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/den-rojdenija-birthday\/\"><i>Birthday<\/i><\/a> sees a funeral repast evolve into a dialogue on existential themes. At the heart of Lida Kanashova\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/adventures-of-samurai-catastrof\/\"><i>Adventures of a Real Samurai in the World of Disasters<\/i><\/a> is a child\u2019s progressive illness with an uncertain outcome. In Konstantin Atamanyuk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/vera-visheva-vishev-pause\/\"><i>Vishev. Pause<\/i><\/a>, an elderly professor entrusts her brain to cryonic preservation, hoping to return to a world where immortality has already been mastered.<\/p>\n<p>Unexpectedly, outer space has become an important theme. Mikhail Arkhipov\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/odnazdi-v-leningrade-out-leningrad\/\"><i>Once Upon a Time in Leningrad<\/i><\/a> simply yet sensitively portrays director Pavel Klushantsev, who created popular-science masterpieces on the margins of Lennauchfilm, in parallel with\u2014if not in spite of\u2014the entire Soviet space programme. In <i><a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/nam-zdes-tesno-not-enough-space\/\">Not Enough Space<\/a><\/i> by Artem Ignatiev and Anton Petrov, young astrophysicists view interstellar expanses not just scientifically but as an artistic and philosophical pursuit, literally seeking and creating the music of the spheres. Yana Osman and Anton Khamchishkin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/koinoe-koemoe\/\"><i>\u039a\u039f\u0399\u039d\u039f\u03a3 \u039a\u039f\u03a3\u039c\u039f\u03a3<\/i><\/a> (which can be translated as Common World), despite its title, eschews outer space for a collision between eternity and modernity.<\/p>\n<p>Comedy\u2014the most challenging genre in documentary\u2014shines in Pavel Timofeev\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/ya-ne-karenina-not-karenina\/\"><i>Not Karenina <\/i><\/a>(about a rising theatre and film star), Arina Galizdra\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/sovet-da-lubov-harmony-love\/\"><i>Harmony and Love<\/i><\/a> (love, laughter, and video circles over Telegram), and Yana Isaenko\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/message2man.com\/en\/films\/dveri-zakr-mind-closing-doors\/\"><i>Mind the Closing Doors<\/i><\/a> (on the daily lives of Moscow metro workers).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, one film in the competition deliberately limits the scope of its exploration: just a ping-pong table\u2014in the latest work by rising star of Russian documentary Ivan Vlasov.<\/p>\n<p><em><b>Alena Solntseva, Pavel Pugachev<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Documentary cinema is most often a matter of search and exploration.
