The term \u00abartificial intelligence\u00bb was coined 68\u00a0years ago, but despite the rapid rise of\u00a0neural networks today, it\u00a0is\u00a0safe to\u00a0say we\u00a0still do\u00a0not fully understand what\u00a0AI truly\u00a0is. John McCarthy, who introduced the term, wrote in\u00a01956: \u00abThe problem is\u00a0that we\u00a0cannot yet characterize in\u00a0general what kinds of\u00a0computational procedures we\u00a0want to\u00a0call intelligent. We\u00a0understand some of\u00a0the mechanisms of\u00a0intelligence and not others. Intelligence is\u00a0the computational part of\u00a0the ability to\u00a0achieve goals in\u00a0the world.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Since the film festival is\u00a0primarily about cinema, we\u00a0decided to\u00a0explore the possibilities of\u00a0AI\u00a0as a\u00a0“computational part”within our ability to\u00a0solve artistic tasks. We\u00a0sought to\u00a0understand what artificial intelligence is\u00a0capable of\u00a0as\u00a0our ally, collaborator, and creative competitor.<\/p>\n

The CyberEye programme consists of\u00a0three parts:<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0The Neural Network Film Laboratory, named after Dziga Vertov, where directors and video artists will spend four days learning how to\u00a0interact with neural networks, under the guidance of\u00a0Andrea Gatopoulos, a\u00a0tutor from the NOUVELLE BUG art residency in\u00a0Italy;<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0a\u00a0series of\u00a0lectures dedicated to\u00a0AI;<\/p>\n

\u2014\u00a0a\u00a0section of\u00a0films created using neural networks.<\/p>\n

This last part features the following works: Maiko Endo\u2019s\u00a0Jizai<\/em><\/a>\u00a0offers a\u00a0futuristic (or\u00a0perhaps not-so-futuristic) story about a\u00a0child and a\u00a0neural network teach each other. St. Petersburg\u2019s Vladislav Rumyantsev takes\u00a0us back to\u00a0the mythical 1976 with\u00a0Leningrad\u00a076<\/em>. Year of\u00a0the Dragon<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>while Mil\u00e9na Trivier\u2019s\u00a0Algorithms of\u00a0Beauty<\/em><\/a>\u00a0animates herbariums collected by\u00a0an\u00a0English botanist 300 years ago. Yana Cherkasova collaborates with artificial intelligence to\u00a0write and create a\u00a0fantastical (or\u00a0perhaps not-so-fantastical) film titled\u00a0e<\/em>cocalypse<\/em><\/a>, Coralie Gourdon, amidst the sleepy snores of\u00a0dozing online gamers, explains the concept of\u00a0time to\u00a0a\u00a0neural network in\u00a0Time Sensitive Characters<\/em><\/a>. The programme also includes two films by\u00a0our Lab\u2019s host Andrea Gatopoulos:\u00a0Happy New Year, Jim<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>an\u00a0existential drama in\u00a0the \u2019machinima\u2019 genre, and\u00a0Eschaton<\/em>\u00a0Ad<\/em><\/a>, where an\u00a0apocalyptic film is\u00a0interrupted by\u00a0an\u00a0unusual advertising integration. Finally, Jeppe Lange\u2019s\u00a0Abyss<\/em><\/a>\u00a0demonstrates a\u00a0neural network in\u00a0action, tasked with finding similarities between 10,000 random images.<\/p>\n
