Selecting and introducing films by\u00a0young directors, the current generation of\u00a0Korean cinema, feels like writing in\u00a0a\u00a0private diary. It\u2019s hard to\u00a0find a\u00a0diverse range of\u00a0emotions in\u00a0Korean series on\u00a0global platforms that many people cheer for. The worship of\u00a0money, violence, despair, and revenge are not the only things that happen in\u00a0my\u00a0land. Of\u00a0course, I\u00a0don\u2019t view fiction as\u00a0an\u00a0exact representation of\u00a0reality, and\u00a0I recognize that they are also dealing with material that has grown out of\u00a0a\u00a0phenomenon. However, considering that human creations are a\u00a0reflection of\u00a0the times, I\u00a0think it\u00a0is\u00a0necessary to\u00a0look at\u00a0the various aspects of\u00a0life in\u00a0Korea with a\u00a0warmer gaze.<\/p>\n

The four films featured in\u00a0this year\u2019s Message to\u00a0Men International Film Festival are shining treasures of\u00a0Korean cinema. They deal with personal emotions that are not constantly talked about by\u00a0the media, and depict the intimate relationships that arise in\u00a0the cities we\u00a0walk through. These four films will give you a\u00a0glimpse into the stories of\u00a0ordinary people living in\u00a0Korea and the secrets that lie within these lives.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Wild Roomer<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has the power to\u00a0capture a\u00a0moment in\u00a0time. The characters in\u00a0the film walk a\u00a0tightrope between intimacy and discomfort, between survival and disrespect. This struggle between the curiosity to\u00a0know the lives of\u00a0others and the defenses to\u00a0protect the territory of\u00a0one\u2019s own life creates a\u00a0film with a\u00a0strange and particular rhythm, \u043ene of\u00a0the most unique debut-features in\u00a0recent years.<\/p>\n

Mimang<\/em><\/a>\u00a0depicts the slow pace of\u00a0a\u00a0man and woman who meet and part ways in\u00a0Seoul, a\u00a0city where everything changes quickly. The spaces they walk and talk in\u00a0are places that have remained unchanged for a\u00a0long time, preserving their own colors and particular architecture. The city is\u00a0filled with spaces and memories of\u00a0times shared with loved ones that one day will, inevitably, disappear. This movie shows that cinema is\u00a0still the best medium to\u00a0preserve personal memories.<\/p>\n

The director of\u00a0Sister\u00a0<\/em>Yujeong<\/em><\/a>\u00a0makes a\u00a0bold choice. The film is\u00a0about the most unexpected of\u00a0the deaths that occur in\u00a0a\u00a0high school restroom, but it\u00a0doesn\u2019t point out social issues or\u00a0chase genre pleasures. The director believes that there are more important things in\u00a0human life than fact-finding, investigating, and criticizing. The film examines each character in\u00a0an\u00a0effort to\u00a0understand others, paradoxically suggesting that social problems require a\u00a0human approach rather than a\u00a0preconceived system of\u00a0laws and believes.<\/p>\n

The Hill of\u00a0Secrets<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0film about how creation begins in\u00a0a\u00a0young person\u2019s life. At\u00a0first glance, it\u00a0seems to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0typical history of\u00a0a\u00a0girl\u2019s coming of\u00a0age, but, little by\u00a0little, it\u00a0build up\u00a0in\u00a0much more than that. The protagonist is\u00a0a\u00a0girl who starts lying about her family to\u00a0avoid embarrassment at\u00a0school because what she loves and is\u00a0good\u00a0at, is\u00a0writing and creating stories and sometimes telling the true is\u00a0not the best for its creations. But, since creation is\u00a0basically lying, the girl\u2019s secrets and lies will mix and resonate in\u00a0her real life.<\/p>\n
