"The Aeroplanes Are Singing"
This film is a portrait of the aircraft designer Sergei Ilyushin. The biography of planes is the biography
of the country, and this forms the basis for the film. It features fascinating stories and a great deal of documentary footage from the early 20th century to the 1980s: Soviet, German, American. It also features the reminiscences of the pilot Konstantin Kokkinaki (about a non-stop flight to America) and Kutepov, Ilyushin’s deputy.
Winner of the Special Prize at the 1979 Leipzig International Film Festival
At a time when all the country’s agriculture was done by collective farms and state farms, and this was presented as the only correct way, the director Mikhail Litvyakov turned to the topic of individual farming, the privateer, and the farmer. The film provoked a storm of indignation from the heads of collective farms and state farms, as well as the party nomenclatura. The question of whether or not the film would get a general release was resolved only by the Central Committee of the Communist Party — in the end, permission to screen the film was granted.
"Every Year in June"
This film focuses on the problem of choosing a future profession for school-children, particularly those in year 8. It looks at parents’ attitudes to the problem of getting into a vocational college and on the career guidance that took place in Leningrad’s schools in order to provide the city’s industries with the personnel they needed.
